With real ale on tap, three excellent comedians on stage, and a heckler of professional standards in the audience, the Comedy Cavern was more than good for a laugh last night.

First up at the Comedy Cavern, situated in the cellar bar of the Porter Pub on George Street, was Shappi Khorsandi, the only female Iranian comic on the circuit. She made much of her ancestry and it’s not hard to see why she won Cosmic Comedy Competition newcomer of the year award last year.
Also garnering laughs before the main event were Danny Boy and compere Geoff Whiting. As well as being one of the organisers of the Comedy Cavern, Geoff is an excellent comedian in his own right and was a finalist in the Daily Telegraph ‘Open Mic Award’ at the 1998 Edinburgh Festival.
Steve Gribbin is a fine comedian from Liverpool who combines disarmingly sharp observations with some hilarious songs. From the first song (‘I Do, Ron Ron’ as sung by the ex-minister Ron Davis) to the last (a parody of Oasis which, he said, has attracted the ire of the band’s management) he had the club roaring, and seats will certainly be at a premium when he comes this way again in the summer.
