George Egg
20 February 2002
George Egg Comedy Cavern, January 27, 2002 With sheets of rain falling outside and live football on a giant screen in the upstairs bar, it was not unreasonable to expect a sparse crowd in the cellar bar of the Porter. As it turned out, however, it was standing room only, and the Comedy Cavern enjoyed its healthiest crowd for a long while. Compere Adam Montgomery was his usual amiable and relaxed self as he chatted to the audience and introduced the four acts of the night. The opening act was Dan Evans, a fine comedian who featured plenty of groan-worthy material elevated by quick-fire delivery and a relentlessly upbeat demeanor. Even better was Nick Page, an apprentice comedian from Gloucester who exhibited a confidence on stage that is unusual in a performer who only made his debut last October. Next up was a debut performance, by Sam Seeger, a young woman from Wales. Her nervousness was plain to see and she stumbled a couple of times, but she left the stage to applause after negotiating what must be an awesome first hurdle. George Egg, the headline act, took to the stage with an outsized suitcase full of a variety of visual props – decks of cards, a bowling ball, a mousetrap and a Spectrum computer on which he demonstrated the fine art of playing the Daley Thompson decathlon computer game. George is a likeable performer who always puts on a good show, tonight being no exception. He ended with a memorable striptease that has to be seen to be believed… though not believing and not seeing might be the better option.
